Bloodhound's Annoyance Over Kid Playing a Recorder Has Parents Feeling Seen

Whether you were in school 30 years ago or have yet to graduate, there are a few well-known traditions you can certainly relate to. Prom, for example, is practically a teenage rite of passage, but there's something much more controversial that students learn years earlier.

I'm talking about playing the recorder, of course! This kid-friendly instrument is popular in schools thanks to its small size and cheap materials, but any parent will confirm that recorders are not popular at home. As it turns out, though, even dogs can relate to the annoyance!

Maggie June the Bloodhound is an all-around family dog, but she had a lot to say when one of her family members came home with a new instrument. She won't leave the little boy alone as he attempts to practice his recorder, but their mom's March 6 TikTok video has everyone laughing.

LOL! This hound dog's reaction is oh-so-relatable. I can't even count the number of people I've heard complain about the recorder--even the kids playing them find them annoying--but this is the first time I've ever seen a pet throw a fit from the sound.

It makes sense why mom Jessica thought that the sound may hurt the family dog's ears. It's a known fact that dog ears are far more sensitive than human ears, especially when it comes to high-pitched sounds. She assumed that the howling was a sound of annoyance--and she could be right--but other hound owners are convinced she's just being a loyal back up singer.

"Apparently, when dogs bark/wail along like this, or with sirens, they think they’re helping you out," informed commenter @powlady. I can see that! Maggie June likely had only the best intentions in mind when she chimed in, but it's easy to see how the howling could be interpreted as annoyance too.

Hounds are Known for Their Howls

I can see why Jessica had to share this hilarious video. Not only can everyone relate to the Bloodhound's howling, but everyone can appreciate the dog's vocal work, too! Hound breed dogs like Maggie June are famous for their howling, but being accompanied by the recorder just takes it to the next level.

Dogs like Beagles, Basset Hounds, and, of course, Bloodhounds often make a long howling sound called a 'bay.' This is all thanks to their history as hunting dogs. When they would corner prey or drive it up a tree, the dogs would use this sound to alert one another (and their humans) about their whereabouts.

Today, hounds bay for a number of different reasons, including both annoyance and singing along. The jury may still be out on what Maggie June was trying to say, but one thing is for sure--the generational trauma of playing the recorder is still alive and well.
