Bart Bryant, former Tour Championship winner, dies in car crash at 59
Former PGA Tour golfer and Tour Championship winner Bart Bryant died Tuesday in a car accident, the Tour announced.
He was 59.
“The PGA TOUR is saddened by the tragic passing of Bart Bryant and our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “The Bryants have been a part of the PGA TOUR family for over four decades and we are grateful for the impact and legacy he made on our organization and countless communities. Bart will be dearly missed."
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said that Bryant and his wife were waiting for a construction crew on a two-lane road on Tuesday when a pickup truck crashed into the back of them at about 60 mph, according to Fox 8.
Bryant was unresponsive when first responders arrived, per the report, and he later died at a local hospital. Bryant’s wife, Donna, was hospitalized with minor injuries. Officials said the driver of the truck was not injured. An investigation is ongoing.
“The Bryant family is grateful for all the prayers and support from the golf community across the country,” his family said in a statement, via Fox 8. “We know Bart is with Jesus. We will miss him.”
Bryant won three times on the PGA Tour in his career (at the Tour Championship and the Memorial Tournament in 2005, and the 2004 Valero Texas Open). He won the Tour Championship by six shots in 2005 over Tiger Woods.
Bryant won the Dicks Sporting Goods Open twice on the PGA Tour Champions, most recently in 2018.
