Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown had a scare over the weekend when she suffered a "massive, prolonged asthma attack" that led to her being rushed to hospital.

The 36-year-old baker and writer told fans via her Instagram Stories that "this is not how my Saturday was supposed to go", over a video of herself wearing an oxygen mask.

In a follow-up message, she thanked fans for their concern and revealed she was "fine" after receiving treatment and being "pumped full of steroids" in hospital.

"My body clearly started fighting a cold and cough in a weird, s*** way and gave me a massive, prolonged asthma attack," Brown said.

She added: "I feel like I've been dug up, look like I've been dug up and sound like Bane, but I'm all right.

"Anxiety and phobia hasn't helped today, but as I'm still working out I need to stop sometimes. Also, I can breathe now which at about 6am this morning I couldn't speak two words."

Brown was able to recover and return home on Saturday in time to watch the England football team's resounding 4-0 victory over Ukraine in the quarter finals of Euro 2020.

The 2016 Bake Off winner also hit back at someone who called her an "attention seeker" for posting a photo of herself preparing to watch the match, just hours after the dramatic images of her hospital stay.

"Round of applause for the most attention seeking behaviour of all! Being a F***ING TROLL!!!" Brown wrote.

She added: "Was actually home. A&E funnily enough don’t have a signed '66 football shirt hung around and weren’t showing the game soooooooo..."

Earlier this week, Brown spoke about how her new book Happy Cooking "nearly broke me" due to its frank discussion of her mental health.

She revealed in April that she had been diagnosed with ADHD and had "a very difficult year" after her split from husband Liam Macaulay and closing her pub due to the Covid-19 lockdowns.

"How the f*** I’m still going, I don’t know. But it was just a lot to take in, a lot to deal with," she told podcast The Burnt Chef Journal.

Brown added: "I need to be on the go all the time and that silence and darkness on top of a brain that can be quite dark anyway was a lot."
