'Britain's Got Talent' judge Amanda Holden almost played Elton John's mum in 'Rocketman'

Amanda Holden almost made the jump from the Britain’s Got Talent judges’ desk to the big screen with a role in Elton John musical Rocketman, the star has revealed.

The role of Elton’s mother, Sheila Eileen Dwight, is played in the film by Bryce Dallas Howard, but it could just as easily have been Holden appearing alongside Taron Egerton’s portrayal of the Crocodile Rock singer.

Speaking to Jamie Theakston and Ashley Roberts on her Heart Radio breakfast show, the 48-year-old said she was asked to send a last-minute audition tape to director Dexter Fletcher.

"I haven't told anyone this so I'm just going to share it between the three of us now,” she said.

"I was right in the middle of doing something for QVC and I got a call from my people saying: 'Listen, you need to quickly put yourself onto tape to play Elton John's mother in the new movie Rocketman'.

“I was like: ‘Are you kidding me?'"

She added: "So I got the script on my phone and Mikey, my hairdresser, pulled out a brown wig – obviously to put me in disguise and make me look like much more of an actress – and I shoved on this wig and put myself on tape and sent it to Dexter Fletcher.”

Holden admitted the experience was an “embarrassing” one and said she knew there “was no chance” of her getting the part as it ended up going to “some huge American”.

The star, who made her film debut in 1996 black comedy Intimate Relations, presented the early morning radio show just hours after appearing in the live final of Britain’s Got Talent.

Meanwhile, Rocketman has already pulled in more than $50m (£44m) at the global box office, as well as receiving positive reviews from film critics.

Its current Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 91% approval.
