Alastair Campbell ‘accidentally announced’ the death of the Queen

Alastair Campbell "accidentally announced" the death of Queen Elizabeth on today's Good Morning Britain.

The former Labour Party spin doctor has hosted the breakfast show for three days, but he made a blunder in his final hour on the programme by saying the Queen had passed away, rather than her late husband Prince Philip, who died last month aged 99.

He said: "We talked a lot about Prince Philip after the death of the Queen."

And a few moments later he interrupted his and co-host Susanna Reid's interview with former footballer Vinnie Jones to correct himself.

He said: "Can I just say something, I think I may have accidentally announced the death of the Queen.

"I meant Prince Philip of course."

Susanna said: "I think people understood exactly what you meant."

Later on, she asked Vinnie if he would like to co-host the programme at some point.

He joked: "I was waiting for the call, I was all up for it."

Susanna asked Vinnie to "come and join [her]", and Alastair quipped: "I think I've just been sacked, Vinnie."

But she said: "You said you were only doing three days."

Later in the episode, Alastair praised ITV for their work on mental health and admitted he has "really enjoyed" his three days co-hosting 'GMB' as he bowed out of the show.

He said: "I've really enjoyed it, and I think ITV has been brilliant on mental health.

"If I get some sleep today I'll be back out on the road tonight with Kay Burley doing a Mental Health Awareness event."
