9 Shot, 3 In Critical Condition, After Denver Shooting Near NBA Finals Venue: Police

Three people were in critical condition after a shooter opened fire in Denver early Tuesday, wounding nine people, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted in the 2000 block of Market Street after the Denver Nuggets won the NBA championship. A suspect who also was wounded was taken into police custody.

The suspect and six victims had non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

“This is a complex, ongoing investigation in its early stages. Preliminary info indicates multiple shots were fired during an altercation involving several individuals,” the Denver Police Department wrote on Twitter. “Updates will be provided as they become available.”

The violence came as the Denver Nuggets won their first NBA championship, defeating the Miami Heat 94-89 in Monday evening’s Game 5 of the playoffs.

It’s unclear if the events are connected, but the shooting took place near where large crowds were celebrating the team’s win, just under a mile from Ball Arena, where the game was played.

Police spokesperson Doug Schepman said most celebrants in the area had dispersed by the time the shots were fired.

“It did occur in the area where we had the largest gathering of folks celebrating during the night,” Schepman said.

Detectives were looking into the altercation that led to the shooting, he added.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
