I think most parents wish certain things for their kids. That they are healthy, happy and kind. Well, the parents of Asher Eckert out of Atchison, Kansas need not worry about that last part because this six-year-old kid is showing a remarkable degree of empathy due to how he celebrated his recent birthday.

After the Eckert family sadly lost their dog Chewie in January, Asher decided to celebrate his birthday and honor his late dog in such a beautiful way.

Atchison Globe Now reports, "Asher decided to spend his upcoming birthday money on food and toys that Chewie liked and donate them to the Atchison Humane Society in honor of Chewie. Amanda posted about Asher’s selfless decision on Facebook and offered others to contribute as well. Donations began flowing in almost immediately, and over $1,000 were sent in over the course of over a month."

One of the sweetest aspects of this touching story? The donation came in right as the shelter was on their last bag of food.

Kids who have dogs are healthier, exercise more, experience less stress and get better grades. One of the best benefits of a kid having a dog? They are more compassionate, as Asher proved above.

If your own kid doesn't want to make a monetary donation or dedicate their birthday to benefitting shelter pets, there are plenty of other ways that they can help animals in need.

Ways You Can Help Shelter Pets in Need

Your local Humane Society or animal shelter welcomes volunteers in so many different capacities. If you like to walk or run, you can volunteer to run or walk a dog. Shelters usually need donations in the forms of laundry detergent, towels, cat litter, and pet foods. You can offer to help clean, shovel driveways or mop out kennels.

Some shelters need volunteers to help bottle feed abandoned kittens, especially during kitten season. Elderly and senior pets would benefit from a shelter break with a visit to someone's home. Some shelters even have programs where kids can read to dogs, and that benefits the dogs by having them spend time with a human and the kids by helping them work on their reading skills.

And, of course, every shelter can do with a monetary donation.

We are so sorry for the loss of Asher's dog Chewie but I think I speak for everyone in saying that this kid is honoring his dog's legacy in a truly wonderful way. What a truly wonderful kid his parents have raised.
