Piers Morgan and Nigel Farage have engaged in a bitter dispute over Donald Trump’s previous remarks about the potential of using disinfectants on people to fight the coronavirus.

Morgan, who recently said he considers the president a friend, told the Brexit Party leader that Trump’s coronavirus strategy led to more than 220,000 deaths in the US.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning, amid the ongoing vote counting in the US presidential election, he criticised Trump’s “refusal to mandate people to wear masks, to tell them from the podium take it seriously, wear your mask, socially distance, all that kind of thing, his nonsensical cure theories like bleach and so on... all of it, to me, was woefully irresponsible”.

Morgan, who was unfollowed by Trump on Twitter, appeared to be referring to a press conference in April when the president asked if disinfectants could be injected into people in response to COVID-19.

Farage, who has spoken at Trump rallies and strongly supported the president, said: “End this nonsense, he never mentioned bleach, Piers, do not, do not, do not allow your viewers to believe that untruth.”

Pushed by Morgan on the point, Farage said: “You are wrong, wrong, wrong.

“You are talking utter rubbish, and on his handling of the crisis... he stopped the flights coming in from China and other countries that carried the infection whilst we continued an open door at Heathrow airport.”

However, Farage also admitted that “not everything” Trump said about the virus “is right”.

In April, Trump said: “I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute, and is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning?

“Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that.”

He later insisted he was being sarcastic.

Counting continues in the US election, in which the race for the White House is still too close to call, and it is possible the result will not be clear for some time.
