What the papers say – October 10

Saturday’s papers are largely dedicated to the Covid-19 heroes and selfless famous faces who have had good deeds rewarded in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The Times and Daily Mail lead with the Honours list, which is headed by the “unsung heroes” of the pandemic.

Meanwhile the Daily Mirror and The Sun dedicate their front pages to footballer Marcus Rashford receiving an MBE for his work helping vulnerable children.

Elsewhere, The Daily Telegraph and the FT Weekend report Chancellor Rishi Sunak is to introduce a new furlough-style scheme to pay workers’ wages as stricter national lockdown measures loom.

However The Guardian says the scheme has been branded “an insult” by leaders in northern England, who say it does not appear to be enough “to prevent genuine hardship, job losses and business failure this winter”.

The i and The Independent report new regional lockdowns are set to come into force as figures suggest the number of infections have doubled in a week.

The Daily Express leads with a son’s plea for people to follow the Government’s measures following the death of his father, who contracted Covid-19 in a pub.

And the Daily Star says Christmas pantomimes have been given the go-ahead by “National Lottery chiefs”.
