Why is the name 'Karen' being used as an insult?

They've been caught on tape ranting and raving, causing a scene and complaining about what sure seems like nonsensical things.

Social media is dubbing them Karens and the phenomenon even has a Wikipedia page: A woman perceived to be entitled are demanding beyond the scope of what is considered appropriate or necessary.

So why the name Karen? As far as we can determine, it began with an internet meme which started circulating on social media in 2014.
