Michael Gove has driven 'on occasion' to test eyesight

Michael Gove has told LBC he had driven to check his eyesight, but he was "not an authority of driving", as it had taken him seven times to pass his test.

When Nick Ferrari put it to Cabinet Minister Michael Gove that Dominic Cumming's Land Rover would not have the petrol capacity to get to and from Durham, the minister said he "thought he bought diesel on the way back."

The exchange came as the senior minister sought to shore up Mr Cummings' position following his widely criticised Downing Street press conference.

Mr Cummings claimed that he had driven to Barnard Castle, around 30 miles from where he was staying at his parents' farm, to test his eyesight.

A Government minister for Scotland resigned on Monday, as a wave of Tory MPs demanded Cummings removal from his post in Downing Street.
