Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to take a step back from the royal family may result in the loss of their royal titles.

Calls for the couple to relinquish their status as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have only grown since the couple made their announcement last week. It was a decision that, after reports of deliberation, is now publicly supported by Queen Elizabeth.

Her Majesty released a statement after meeting with Harry, Prince William and Prince Charles at her Sandringham Estate for a summit on Monday afternoon, saying "there will be a period of transition" for the couple in both Canada and the United Kingdom as the royal family works through these "complex matters."

However, some believe that an announcement recalling Meghan and Harry's royal titles, which were bestowed on their wedding days, could be imminent.

While the monarch addressed her grandson and Meghan a few times in Monday's statement, she did not refer to them by either their Sussex titles nor their HRH (His or Her Royal Highness) titles, which she has done so in the past and is standard for the crown. The decision to repeal their titles lies solely in the hands of Queen Elizabeth.

Despite the couple announcing they wanted to become financially independent from the crown, it is explained on Harry and Meghan's website that they will continue to use Frogmore Cottage as their "official residence as they continue to support the monarchy, and so that their family will always have a place to call home in the United Kingdom."
