Size matters more than location to many homeowners, study finds

The size of a property matters more to many homeowners than its location, a survey has found.

More than a third (38%) of homeowners regret not moving into a bigger property than they currently live in and a quarter (25%) wish at least one of their rooms was larger, the survey found.

A bigger kitchen was the most popular aspect of the home people said they would prioritise next time they moved, with en suite bathrooms and larger bedrooms coming second and third on the list respectively.

A third (33%) of homeowners are considering moving home in 2020, the survey from Barclays Mortgages found.

And a home’s location is not at the top of the list of priorities for many prospective movers.

A third (33%) said the size of a home is more important than the location and two fifths (42%) would choose to own a larger property over staying in their current area.

One in six (15%) were concerned that their current property is not big enough for entertaining in general, the survey of 2,000 people found.

Hannah Bernard, head of mortgages at Barclays, said: “It’s important to think about whether you need more space in a new property or if you can simply extend your home to suit your needs.”
