Types of wines you can buy cheap that taste good

If you're planning a Christmas or New Year bash this year then you don't have to shell out hundreds of pounds for the finest wines to impress your guests.

According to a survey from Kanter, around 300,000 shoppers have already swapped high-price wines for cheaper alternatives, according to the Sun.

Budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl are two of the most popular places to find cheap champagne and wines - often beating more expensive rivals on not just cost but also taste.

So what should you consider?

Lidl's Fairtrade Paarl Chenin Blanc comes in under the magic £5 point along with their Cimarosa Chilean Merlot.

If you prefer a spot of bubbly to mark the festive season then Prosecco is a cheaper alternative to Champagne. Aldi's Ca'di Pietra Prosecco comes in at a reasonable £6.99.

Marks & Spencer's Vino Tavola Rosso red wine comes in at £5 with Sainsbury's I Heart Italian Sparkling Rosé - a budget bubbly mix of red and white.

As supermarkets vie to boost flatlining festive sales - there are plenty of special offers that mean you can spend less for bigger flavours.
