A loyal dog has waited at the same spot by the roadside for four years for its owner to return.

The sad pooch was seen by passing motorcycle rider Anuchit Uncharoen on a highway in Roi-Et, northeastern Thailand in September.

Anuchit rode by the following afternoon with his son and found the same dog sitting in the same place. He stopped to check on the animal and locals told him that it had been returning to the same spot since 2015.

Resident Saowaluck Pinnuvech, 45, said locals had told her the dog was a stray when she came across it in 2016, and that it had been seen at the same spot for about a year.

Went missing after jumping from her pickup truck

"I took him to the vet and adopted him myself and named him Leo, but after a couple of days he was missing from the house and I found him at this spot again so I let him stay here and have been coming to feed him every day," she said.

Anuchit shared the story of Leo, which prompted the dog's former owner to come forward. Noi Sittisarn, 64, visited the area and claimed the dog was named Bong Bong and had gone missing after jumping from her pickup truck.

"I was travelling on this road but then I noticed that Bong Bong was missing from the trunk," she said.

"Me and my husband drove around to find him but we did not find him and we did not know where he could be."

She confessed that she wanted to keep the dog

The dog bounded over excitedly to Noi and let the elderly woman rub his head, but refused to go home when she tried to carry it to the pickup truck. Noi understood that Bong Bong might need some time to adjust so she promised to come back again the following day.

However, that night Saowaluck called Noi and cried as she confessed that she wanted to keep the dog herself because she had become attached to it.

Noi said that she was more than happy to let the dog stay with Saowalack.

"I have no intention to refuse her request. Due to her good care of the dog I believed she and the dog will be happy together but I would like her to keep the dog in her house,'' she said.

A delighted Saowaluck promised to take the dog home.
