Residents mistake sunshade net for China's 'Loch Ness monster'

Passers-by in China were sent in to a frenzy of excitement after they spotted an unusual creature in the Yangtze River, prompting speculation that Scotland's Nessie could have a Far Eastern cousin.

The mobile phone footage shows an unusual eel-like creature swimming through the murky waters of one of China's longest and most important waterways.

The myth of the Loch Ness Monster has spurned a host of copy-cat sightings around the world, including: the United States, New Zealand and even Antarctica.

However, the footage a has since been debunked as parts of a parasol that came loose and was carried away by the currents in the river.

A team of scientists earlier this month conducted DNA tests across Loch Ness, revealing that giant eels were the most likely cause of the famous monster sightings.
