Public warned not to approach missing prisoner

Members of the public have been warned not to approach a prisoner who has absconded from an open jail.

Sean Bonar, 29, failed to return to HMP Castle Huntly, near Dundee, this week after being released on licence for home leave.

It is understood Bonar was jailed for six years in 2016 for a baseball bat attack on two men in the Knightswood area of Glasgow.

Police Scotland, who have appealed for information to help trace him, said it is believed he has connections in the Glasgow area.

Bonar is 5ft 9in, with an average build and short dark hair.

The force said in a statement: “If seen, members of the public should not approach him and should contact Police Scotland on 101 or 999.”

The Scottish Prison Service said it does not comment on individual prisoners.

A spokeswoman said: “A rigorous risk assessment is undertaken prior to any offender being granted un-escorted leave.

“The majority of these take place without incident. Those on home leave are released on licence conditions.

“Where an individual breaches their licence conditions, the Scottish Prison Service will work with Police Scotland to apprehend the individual who is now unlawfully at large.”

Anyone wishing to provide information anonymously can do so via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
