Pensioner saved after sinking up to neck in manure

Firefighters have saved the life of a pensioner who became trapped up to his neck in manure while walking his dog.

Brian Marshall, 75, was trying to retrieve his Jack Russell, Archie, from the huge pile of dung - but ended up getting stuck himself.

Fellow dog owner Matt Hollick raised the alarm after hearing his cries for help.

Firefighters arrived at the scene near Upper Caldecote, in Bedfordshire, just in time to rescue Mr Marshall, who was treated for hypothermia at Bedford Hospital.

He told CambridgeshireLive: "I'd given up trying to get out on my own. I felt like I was digging my own grave. I was gradually giving up and didn't think I was going to make it."
