Lofty Holloway and Mary ‘The Punk’ Smith returned to Albert Square last night, for the sombre but also celebratory occasion of EastEnders GP Dr Legg’s funeral.

Neither Tom Watt or Linda Davidson had been back to EastEnders in more than 30 years, and viewers were gripped with nostalgia.

Lofty pitched up at Sharon’s (Letitia Dean) house with a classic ‘Remember me?’, revealing that since he’s been away from the east end, the former Queen Vic barman has made a bundle managing pubs around the country.

Former wild child Mary turned up too, with her daughter Annie in tow, seen only as a baby when she turned her back on Albert Square in 1988, giving the two-finger salute as they were whisked away on a bus to a new future.

Dot seemed surprised that she wasn’t still a punk, mind.

Meanwhile, the tears flowed on Twitter…

But Lofty’s arrival appeared to be foreshadowing another potential comeback for the veteran BBC soap.

He turned up with a cheque for £20,000 for Vicki Fowler, daughter of Michelle Fowler, the baby he once thought was his, though it later transpired her father was ‘Dirty’ Den Watts.

If she wants it, she might have to turn up and get it at some point…

Vicki’s character was last seen in the show in 2004, when she was played by Scarlett Alice Johnson.
