Did medieval knights invent luggage?

You might think luggage is a modern creation, but it's almost 1,000 years old.

During the time of the Crusades, a knight's armour weighed a hefty 30-50kg.

Constant battle raged across the Middle East, and carrying their equipment was not easy.

So they invented the first luggage to carry their armour and weapons in 1153.

The knights used wooden trunks and chests pulled on a horse or peasant-drawn cart.

Almost 500 years later 'luggage' was added to the Oxford English Dictionary, derived from the word 'lug' and defined as 'inconveniently heavy baggage.
