Holly Willoughby says she believes in bizarre claim about exploding sloths

Holly Willoughby left her co-host Phillip Schofield in hysterics by making a very unusual claim about sloths.

Willoughby revealed that she had been told that sloths would explode if turned ‘the right way up.’ A hysterical Schofield said ‘Oh, you’re actually going to say it?’ and then said he had tried Googling her claim but hadn’t come up with a firm answer.

Willoughby, who returned to This Morning this week after weeks away filming I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! denied Schofield’s joking that she’d ‘been told that in Australia’ with: “No. I’ve definitely heard that somewhere, but I don’t know if it’s true. Now I’m hearing it out loud, I’m questioning it even more. I’ve got a feeling there’s some truth to it somewhere.”

“Apparently they don’t fart either. The producers are telling me in my ear. That would make you explode,” she added.

Determined to get to the bottom of the hysterical situation, Schofield called in the help of Marcel McKinley, Senior Zookeeper at London Zoo.

“I’m really sorry Holly they don’t [explode]. Once a week they go down to the grounds to go to the toilet, and they crawl around a bit, so if it happens they don’t explode,” McKinley said.

However, according to Vox, another zoological expert has claimed that the furry creatures can indeed ‘burst.’

Daniella Rabaiotti, a zoologist from the Zoological Society of London told the website: “They eat a lot of plants; they avoid releasing gas through the quirk of their slow digestion. They only poo about every three weeks.

“If gases accumulated in sloths’ intestines over that long a time, they might get sick — and even burst.

“So would-be sloth farts are simply reabsorbed through the intestines into the bloodstream. The gases are then respired out of the lungs,” Rabaiotti said.

This Morning also made headlines yesterday when Willoughby and Schofield announced the daytime show would be moving to six days a week. The new Sunday slot will be hosted by Eammon Holmes and Ruth Langsford.
