Emma Stone apologises for 'white-washed' role at Golden Globes 2019

The Golden Globes opening monologue has always been a moment for the host to mock Hollywood and this year was no different.

Sandra Oh took a moment to congratulate Crazy Rich Asians for getting a Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy nomination but in doing so she ended up getting an apology from Emma Stone.

That’s because Oh made a joke about the number of times white actors have taken Asian roles in Hollywood and Stone’s film was included.

Crazy Rich Asians is up for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy,” the Korean-Canadian actress began. “It’s the first studio film with an Asian lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha.”

Stone, who played Allison Ng in the latter comedy (a character who was part Chinese and Hawaiian) could be heard off-screen shouting “I’m sorry.”

People watching the show found the situation hilarious and shared their thoughts on Twitter.

Some people thought it was Scarlett Johansson who apologised as she appeared in Ghost in the Shell as the Major (originally Major Motoko Kusanagi) in the adaptation of the Japanese animated movie, though she was not in attendance on Sunday night.

Oh herself made history at the awards ceremony by being the first person of Asian descent to ever host the Golden Globes.

She also became the first Asian woman in 39 years to win the Globe for Best Actress in a TV series – Drama; Yoko Shimada won the same award in 1981, for NBC’s Shogun.

This also means she’s the first Asian woman ever to win more than one Globe because of her past Best Supporting Actress in a Series win for playing Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy.
