Strange seismic waves have been detected around Earth with no apparent source

Researchers are working to solve the mystery of recently detected widespread seismic waves that had no immediately apparent source.

According to National Geographic the November 11th tremors originated on the island of Mayotte which is located off the coast of Madagascar.

The waves travelled as far as Canada, Hawaii and Chile. The movements are said to be similar to the third wave of movement that follows an earthquake., but Mayotte has not experienced such an event in a long time.

Göran Ekström, a seismologist at Columbia University who specialises in unusual earthquakes told National Geographic: "I don't think I've seen anything like it, [but] doesn't mean that, in the end, the cause of them is that exotic."

Potential sources suggested by both experts enthusiasts include the explosion of an underwater volcano, off shore magmatic movement and a sea monster.
