Irish woman given jail sentence after opening Pringles before paying

A woman from Cork, Ireland has been given prison time for opening a can of Pringles before paying for it.

Kathleen McDonagh, aged 25, was reportedly in a store that she had been banned from, at the Mahon Point shopping centre in Cork, when the incident occurred.

According to the BBC the woman was stopped at the checkout and is said to have opened the tube of crisps, worth £1.30, so that they would have to let her buy them.

That's not how the situation played out - nearly two years later she found herself in court being handed a four month sentence, with two months suspended, for doing criminal damage to a package of crisps.

In handing down the sentence, the judge is reported to have said it was difficult to see her actions as anything but "smart Alec behaviour".
