Sarah Payne’s killer Roy Whiting was reportedly left drenched in blood and critically injured after being attacked by two fellow inmates in prison.

According to The Sun, Whiting – who was jailed for life in 2001 for the murder of the eight-year-old schoolgirl – was stabbed repeatedly with makeshift blades after being attacked in his cell at Wakefield Prison.

The 59-year-old was reportedly rushed to hospital with multiple stab wounds but received treatment and is expected to recover.

He is said to be back in Wakefield prison and in a stable condition.

A source told The Sun the fact that Whiting was stabbed in prison meant he had received treatment so quickly.

The source told the newspaper: “If Whiting had been stabbed in the street he might have died. Because he was in prison, every alarm was raised and he was rushed to hospital within minutes.”

Sarah Payne, eight, was taken by Whiting in July 2000 as she played with her sister and brothers near her grandparents’ home in West Sussex.

Whiting was found guilty of her murder in December 2001 and jailed for life. He will serve a minimum of 40 years.

The paedophile had previously snatched another girl, sexually assaulting her, but was freed from prison.

Sarah’s mother Sara Payne went on to campaign for Sarah’s Law, which allows people to find out if convicted sex offenders are living near them.

The reported stabbing is not the first time Whiting has been attacked in prison.

Previously he has been stabbed in the eye and has also had his face slashed.
