In Pictures: Burning effigies and flaming tar barrels for November 5

The skies around Lewes have been lit up by fiery orange as the East Sussex town celebrates November 5.

Lewes Borough Bonfire Society is well known for burning effigies of high-profile political figures such as Donald Trump and Sepp Blatter.

As many as 60,000 people have attended Lewes Bonfire Night in the past, and emergency services have made their annual plea urging people not to travel to the town.

Meanwhile, youngsters in the West Country town of Ottery St Mary have been taking part in the long-time tradition of carrying burning tar barrels.

The tar barrel tradition is hundreds of years old. The exact origins are unknown, but may have started after the gunpowder plot of 1605.

Various alternative reasons suggested for burning barrels have included fumigation of cottages and as a warning of the approach of the Spanish Armada.
