The final of The Great British Bake Off will feature its first ever outdoor challenge using open fire cooking, its been confirmed.

Finalists Ruby, Kim-Joy and Rahul will have to leave the security of the famous Bake Off tent for the technical challenge.

Though the details are being kept a secret, the outdoor bake is said to be ‘deceptively simple’.

It will see finalists in the grounds of Welford Park in Berkshire, and under parasols, as the filming happened during this summer’s heatwave.

Never before has the veteran baking show conducted a challenge outside of its famous tent.

And as with all technical challenges, contestants are given scarce instructions and no previous practice.

The remaining challenges – the signature bake and the climactic showstopper – will happen back under canvas.

The final signature will be making fresh doughnuts, while the showstopper will require Ruby, Kim-Joy and Rahul to create a landscape-themed creation.

The show’s semi-final last week was hit by controversy after it appeared that mild-mannered research scientist Rahul continued decorating his creations after time had been called on two occasions.

Presenter Sandi Toksvig stuck up for him, however.

Speaking to Digital Spy, she said: “What you see is what you get [with Rahul].

“He’s a really charming man with very little self-confidence and an astonishing talent.

“The others all have talent, Briony is talented, Ruby is talented, Kim-Joy is talented but at the end of the day, it’s that bake on that day. I’m sorry if there is a backlash.

“Everybody is doing their best. These are not telly people. These are people who have decided to put themselves forward to do something that they are passionate about.

“So, I would hate for there to be a backlash against anybody.”

This year’s final airs on Channel 4 on Tuesday night, at 8pm.
