‘Callous’ robber jailed after stealing gold bangles from 102-year-old relative

A “callous” robber who ripped out a 102-year-old relative’s hearing aid and stole gold bangles from her wrists has been jailed for eight years.

Ghulam Qudir had visited the victim’s home on May 12 under the guise of paying his respects after a family death, Derbyshire Police said.

The 34-year-old later returned to the house when the pensioner was alone and forced his way into the property in Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

He then restrained his elderly relative and injured her wrists after snatching her gold bangles.

“This sentence reflects the severity of the crime and I am pleased that this may give the victim and her family some comfort that justice has been done.”

The woman’s earrings, glasses and hearing aid were removed and thrown on the floor as Qudir left.

Qudir, of Almond Street, Derby, was found guilty of robbery after trial at Nottingham Crown Court and was jailed on Monday.

Detective Constable Claire Croll said: “This was a callous and pre-meditated robbery of a vulnerable person who Qudir knew would not be able to fight back or raise the alarm.

“This sentence reflects the severity of the crime and I am pleased that this may give the victim and her family some comfort that justice has been done.”
