Nine must-see World Cup TV highlights

Once every four years the world's best footballing nations gather to compete in the World Cup Finals. This year, the 32 teams will meet in Russia, with Gareth Southgate's young England squad an outside bet for glory. So whet your appetite with the History Channel's fascinating documentaries and then tune in for the live games once the tournament kicks off on June 14.

2. Opening ceremony and Russia v Saudi Arabia - Thursday 14th June at 2pm on ITV1

There's sure to be some weird and wonderful sights and sounds to enjoy as the tournament gets underway at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Around 500 dancers, gymnasts and trampolinists will be performing before the opening match which may just pale in comparison!

3. England v Tunisia - Monday 18th June at 7pm on BBC One

Gareth Southgate's team get their tournament underway four days later with a winnable fixture. Will Harry Kane transfer his league form on to the the world stage? Will England finally play with the style and creativity lacking since Euro 1996? Will Raheem Sterling have updated his gun tattoo? 5. England v Panama - Sunday 24th June at 1pm on BBC One

England v Nigeria - International Friendly

England's second fixture is against Central American opposition. A win here will be an important step towards reaching the Round of 16 and gaining momentum ahead of tricky final group game.
