Two out of three holidaymakers break their budgets - report

More than two-thirds of holidaymakers bust their budgets when travelling overseas, new figures show.

Only 32% of people who set a spending limit for their last trip were able to stick to it, a poll of 2,087 adults for Post Office Travel Money revealed.

The average overspend per person on foreign holidays was £98.

Typical budgets were £360, which is down 3% on 12 months ago.

A recent study found that more than three out of four (76%) holidaymakers say the cost of meals, drinks and other tourist staples influence their destination choice.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: "Given their concerns about resort costs, we urge holidaymakers to set a realistic budget to avoid overspending and having to pay extra fees to pay on plastic or withdraw cash from an ATM.

"A good way to save money is to pick a resort where costs are low like Sunny Beach, Bulgaria or Marmaris, Turkey, which were cheapest in our latest barometer of resort costs."

Mainland Spain, Turkey, Greece and the Canary Islands offer the best value out of 17 popular destinations, according to holidaymakers.

Travellers say they get the poorest value for money in Scandinavia, Dubai and France.
