Man in court for 'sending money to sister in Syria'

A man accused of sending money to his sister in Syria has appeared in court charged with a terror offence.

Salim Wakil, 24, is alleged to have arranged a payment of around £2,550 (exactly 3,000 US dollars) in February last year.

Prosecutors say the money was for his sister, who allegedly left the UK aged 16 in 2014.

Wakil, from Fleet, Hampshire, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday charged with a single count under Section 17 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

The charge states he "entered into or became concerned in an arrangement to make available money, knowing or having reasonable cause to suspect that it may be used for a terrorist purpose."

Wakil spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and nationality as British during the brief hearing.

Chief magistrate Emma Arbuthnot granted him conditional bail and said he will next appear at the Old Bailey on April 17.
