New hybrid Range Rover drives up 'Heaven's Gate' in incredible video
Jaguar Land Rover is no stranger to incredible stunts when launching a new vehicle. The latest Land Rover Discovery launched with a record-breaking Lego bridge; the new E-Pace, a mind-blowing mid-air somersault.
So to launch the new Range Rover Sport PHEV, the company needed to do something really special. But instead of a daring acrobatic stunt, it took the hybrid up a dizzying ascent towards 'Heaven's Gate' in China – becoming the first vehicle ever to do so.
Piloted by Formula E test driver Ho-Pin Tung, the car first had to endure a seven-mile mountain road – with 99 corners, named the 'Dragon Road'.
Once it arrived at the bottom of the steps, the car paused for a moment, before ascending the 45-degree flight at an impressive pace. With 999 steps in total, it's a long and dangerous journey – just sliding backwards an inch would see the car lose grip and tumble earthwards.
"I've experienced Formula E, Formula 1 and won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans," said Ho-Pin. "But this was without doubt one of the most demanding driving challenges I've ever faced."
