Performance car title Evo Magazine has revealed its 2017 Car of the Year after extensively testing what it considers the most thrilling superminis, hot hatches, hypercars, saloons, sports cars, coupes, GTs and supercars on the market.

The team racked up thousands of miles across England, Wales, Scotland and Germany, ensuring that their favourite car from each class was placed on roads that put them in their element.

Unlike previous years, the Evo team didn't restrict itself to only new cars launched during the last twelve months.

A post on the website claims: "As we see all too often, the latest arrivals aren't always an improvement over the established class leader.

"In addition, for a car to be eligible for consideration, you must be able to place an order for one, and not need to be a 'special' customer to do so. In other words, no unobtainium".

The stunning McLaren 720S was crowned both Car of the Year and Best Supercar of 2017, with the magazine's experienced road testers considering it one "very special car".

Stuart Gallagher, editor of Evo, said, "The McLaren 720S is as much about what it represents for the company, how far it has come and, perhaps crucially, what is yet to follow.

"It is the product of a manufacturer that hasn't changed its focus on wanting to build the most exciting, thrilling and best performance cars it can".

However, the Evo Car of the Year list isn't simply about £200,000 supercars, as praise was also heaped on the far more affordable and approachable Peugeot 208 GTi and Honda Civic Type R.

Alfa Romeo received two commendations on the coveted list, winning both the Sports Saloon and Supersaloon categories with the Giulia Veloce and Giulia Quadrifoglio respectively.
