Queen and Duke of Edinburgh take train to begin Christmas break

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have begun their Christmas break like any other couple - returning home by train.

The monarch and her consort were pictured arriving at King's Lynn station in Norfolk after travelling from London.

The Queen and Philip caught a late morning service from King's Cross station, and it is likely they travelled first class.

Philip was pictured clutching a book as he stepped from the carriage, something to while away the journey which took just over 90 minutes.

He was holding a copy of Michelangelo: The Complete Paintings, Sculptures and Architecture by Frank Zollner - which was published earlier this year.

Sandringham, the Queen's private estate in Norfolk, is a short journey from King's Lynn and she will spend the Christmas period and new year at her home with Philip.

The royal family traditionally join the monarch and her consort for part of the festive period and attend the Christmas Day service at a church on the Sandringham estate.

Prince Harry and fiancee Meghan Markle will be among members of the monarchy walking to St Mary Magdalene Church on December 25.
