A 10-year-old boy has been attacked and killed by a crocodile while swimming in Malawi.

Owen Sanudi was attacked by the crocodile while he was swimming with friends in the Shire River, which passes through Liwonde National Park, police spokesman Davie Sulumba said.

Speaking to the Daily Sabah, Sulumba said: "The deceased was attacked by a hungry crocodile and he drowned in the river.

"Post-mortem results from Machinga District Hospital proved that the death was due to loss of blood and suffocation."

The fatality is the second crocodile attack death in the district in three months. It is believed a rise in attacks could be linked to a lack of prey.

Also, some suggest that Malawi's decision to join the International Convention on Endangered Species (CITES), which limits the culling of crocodiles, has led to a rise in their numbers.

Back in August, a 14-year-old girl was killed by a crocodile in front of her mum in Kenya.

Hellen Amondi had gone to collect water at Lake Victoria's Ng'ou beach in Homa Bay with her mother Margaret Atieno and her twin sister.

Ms Atieno said her daughter had finished fetching water but went back to wash mud off her legs. It was then that the crocodile attacked and she had to endure the horror of seeing her daughter's body dragged away in the crocodile's jaws.
