Legendary base jumper dies after leaping 22,000ft off mountain

A legendary Russian daredevil died while attempting his latest stunt in a wingsuit accident in eastern Nepal.

Valery Rozov performed a base jump from a 22,000-foot mountain in the Himalayas on Saturday.

The 52-year-old was near Mt. Ama-Dablam. An organiser for his expedition told The Himalayan Times he crashed into a cliff.

Red Bull, which sponsored the base jumper, said in a statement: "With deep sorrow, we report the tragic death of our friend Valery Rozov during an expedition on Mount Ama-Dablam in the Himalayas, eastern Nepal.

"Valery will always remain in our memory: strong in spirit, professional, modest, full of energy, an eternal dreamer who was forever burning with new ideas and projects."

Rozov was an experienced wingsuiter who had made the highest ever base jump from 25,260 feet on Mt Cho-Oyu in 2016. He also made a jump from Mt Everest at an altitude of 23,670 feet in 2013.
