Volunteers find ancient coins at Scotney Castle

Volunteers for the UK's National Trust inadvertently found a large collection of rare coins at Scotney Castle.

They were looking through drawers in the castle's study in the hopes of finding old photographs when they came across the loot.

The 186 coins have since been examined by an expert at the Museum of London Archaeology.

A release from the institution notes: "Scotney Castle was the home for 200 years of the Hussy family before it was left to the care of the National Trust. Research into family diaries and the archives suggests the coins were collected during the 19th Century by avid collector, Edward Hussey III and one of his sons."

The museum says the coins are largely of Roman origin but the collection also includes pieces that date as far back as archaic Greece.

They will be displayed as part of an upcoming exhibition at the museum.
