Son gives mother £37,000 winning lottery ticket

A woman in Ottawa, Kansas received some $5 lottery tickets from her son and soon learned she'd been given a $50,000 (£37,000) gift.

Sandra Gilliam said: "My son bought a couple of tickets at the gas station and when he came home he handed them to me."

The true value of the tickets was revealed when she scratched them off the following morning - she offered to give the ticket back to her son, but he insisted that she keep it.

She waited a week to claim the prize, and when asked why she said: "I stay with my 90-year-old mother during the week, so I only have a couple of days when I could make the trip."

Gilliam also mentioned that she's likely to use the money to put a down payment on a house.
