Boy 'attacked by shark' in Gran Canaria

A young boy is thought to have been bitten by a shark while surfing in Gran Canaria.

The boy, 13, sustained a nasty-looking injury to his foot, although there has been no official explanation provided by authorities as to how the injuries were sustained.

According to the Daily Mail, local authorities were informed about a shark sighting just a few days ago. The government said it would carry out an inspection of the area to look for sharks.

The Daily Star reports that it's believed the bite may have come from a blue shark.

There have never been any fatal shark attacks in Gran Canaria, and only five attacks on humans in the last 100 years.

Back in 2015, Christina Ojeda was attacked by a 10ft shark and bitten on the arm on Christmas Day.

The 38-year-old was on a winter sun holiday in Gran Canaria when she was attacked at Arinaga Beach.

There are a number of shark species in the coast off the island, including hammerheads, makos and bull sharks.
