Father of four killed in drive-by shooting named as Mekel Sterling

Police have named a father of four who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Birmingham.

Mekel Sterling, 36, died in hospital after being shot on Great Hampton Row, Hockley, on Wednesday night.

In a statement released through West Midlands Police, the victim's family said: "Our son and brother was a lovely man and was loved by all. We will miss his beautiful soul and smile."

Commenting on the ongoing inquiry, Detective Chief Inspector Edward Foster, from the force's homicide team, said: "My team is working around the clock to trace who is responsible for this horrific murder.

"We have taken several statements, but I still need to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious.

"Mekel's family are understandably devastated by his death and we have specialist officers supporting them through this dreadful time."
