Five best running shoes for women

Updated

Whether you're a newbie or a pro, having the right footwear is a must for runners. Here are five of the best trainers for women, including options for marathon runners, cross-country enthusiasts, and city pavement pounders.

1. Asics Dynaflyte

If you're looking for a good all-round running shoe, you can't go far wrong with Asics Dynaflyte.
Ideal for long-distance runners, they offer stability and comfort thanks to Asics' FlyteFoam midsole. As well as absorbing the initial impact of your foot striking the ground, (making them a good option for pavement runners), they won't lose their shape, no matter how many miles you clock up.

Unlike some brands, Asics Dynaflyte haven't traded comfort for bulk, and you'll find them surprisingly lightweight for the amount of support they provide. Not only do they look great, their bright and reflective design will make you easier to spot on evening runs too.

2. Saucony Triumph ISO 3

Marathon runners need a shoe that's light, supportive and comfortable. Saucony's Triumph ISO 3 is designed for neutral runners, especially heel-strikers, and offers excellent cushioning on road or track surfaces. Their Isofit system gives a "sock-like feeling", adapting to your feet as you run – they're so super-springy you'll feel like you're bouncing along.

The mesh upper ensures they are lightweight and breathable. The only downside is that they aren't waterproof, so your feet may get a little damp on rainy days. However, given how comfy and supportive they are (you won't have to worry about blisters!), we can easily overlook that.

3. Brooks Women's Ravenna 8 Running Shoes

Brooks is a market leader in running shoes, and offer some of the best lightweight and comfortable shoes around. The Ravenna 8 is designed with overpronators (runners whose feet roll too far inwards when they land) in mind.

While they're slightly more rigid than standard trainers, they're designed to be comfortable for neutral runners too. However, because they're snug around the midsole and looser around the toes, you might find they take a little getting used to if you usually opt for a looser fit.

4. Salomon XA Enduro

Designed for serious cross-country runners, these shoes can handle everything you throw at them – from hard-core terrain to muddy fields and forest tracks. As you would expect from an all-terrain shoe, they offer good stability and excellent grip on a variety of surfaces.

The only downside is that they are a little heavy, which is something you may start to notice on a very long run. However, this is true of many cross-country trainers – so don't let that put you off trying them.

5. Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 Shoes

If you're on a budget and looking for a good-entry level road shoe, the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 is a safe bet. Offering excellent grip, they won't let you down even in wet or icy conditions.

They might be a little heavier than more expensive running shoes, but they offer good support and comfort – with enough 'bounce' to help you spring along.
