A 14-year-old girl has been killed by a crocodile in front of her mum in Kenya.

Hellen Amondi had gone to collect water at Lake Victoria's Ng'ou beach in Homa Bay with her mother Margaret Atieno and her twin sister.

Ms Atieno said her daughter had finished fetching water but went back to wash mud off her legs. It was then that the crocodile attacked and she had to endure the horror of seeing her daughter's body dragged away in the crocodile's jaws,

Speaking to the-star.co.ke, she said: "We were about to leave...she had told us one of her shoes stuck in the mud when the crocodile grabbed and dragged her into the water.

"I raised the alarm for neighbours to rescue my daughter but this was in vain as the crocodile had moved far away."

According to the nation.co.ke, Kenya Wildlife Service South Nyanza Regional Warden Mary Mayande led a team of armed rangers in a search for the girl's body, but was unsuccessful.

He said: "My officers are still committed to searching for the body. I will give a comprehensive statement when the body is retrieved."

Area Assistant Chief William Omogi said crocodile attacks have recently increased in the village, saying: "Crocodiles are causing a lot of discomfort to residents of this area. They have also killed a number of livestock in this village."
