UK weather: Summer frost and showers predicted

Britain is set to see temperatures fall as low as 2C as rain showers, thunder and strong winds sweep in over the next few days.

While Europe suffers scorching temperatures in a 43C heatwave, the UK is expected to see April-like conditions.

Weather forecasters have predicted frost in Scotland overnight and lows of 2C in the north and west of Britain.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna told the Scottish Sun: "Chilly starts are even seeing grass frost in Scotland.

"Southern Europe is extremely hot but Scotland is on the cold side of Atlantic jet stream winds, which are driving low pressure systems towards us.

"Saturday saw showers, with Sunday seeing rain in Scotland. Very mixed spells follow in the week ahead."

In its five-day forecast for the UK, the Met Office says after a cool start to Sunday, southern and eastern Britain will see sunny spells while the west and north experiences showers, which will become heavier for some on Sunday night, moving to Wales and the Midlands.

For Monday, it says: "Cloud and rain will move slowly southeast across England and Wales, although the far southeast should stay dry until the evening. Brighter with scattered, heavy showers elsewhere and feeling rather cool."

From Tuesday to Thursday, it is expected to be "predominantly unsettled and often cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain, locally heavy and thundery, accompanied by strong winds at times". The Met Office says it will become drier from the west later but cool throughout.
