A mother died after a deer smashed into the windscreen of her family's car when it was struck by another car and sent airborne on a country lane in Ohio, USA on Thursday.

Amy Stoneburner, 39, was in the front passenger seat, while her husband was driving and their two children, nine-year-old Jessica and 12-year-old Michelle, sat in the backseat.

The Associated Press reports that Stoneburner died at the scene following the freak accident involving the deer and the motorist travelling in the opposite direction.

Her family were treated for minor injuries, while the 69-year-old driver of the car that struck the deer and his three passengers were uninjured.

WJMJ.com reports that officials said the incident is considered an accident, similar to if a tree fell on someone.

The crash happened around 68 miles east of Cleveland.
