Is there a walled Roman town lying beneath a Skegness beach?

Wonderful historic artefacts have often been discovered on the Lincolnshire coastline - but one expert suggests there could even be a Roman walled town waiting to be discovered under a Skegness beach.

Indeed, not just a great spot for a day trip to the beach, the county council's find liaison officer Adam Daubney said historical finds could be just the tip of the archaeological iceberg in Lincolnshire.

According to the Leicester Mercury, Mr Daubney said: "Roman sites have come to light at Mablethorpe and Ingoldmells, and we've found remnants of medieval salt working, showing us how people were exploiting the coast to make a living.

"There is possibly even a whole Roman walled town waiting to be discovered on the Skegness coast.

"Finds encountered on the shore can give us tantalising glimpses into these long lost sites."

Mr Daubney would like the public to email him about any archaeological artefacts that are discovered on the coast so they can be recorded.

One local told Lincolnshire Live that he believes there's also treasure to be found along the 50 miles of coastline.

Bobby Baldwin, the owner of the Snack Shack in Mablethorpe, said: There was a small estuary, Saltfleet Haven, that had a lot of trade. There has also been a few ship wrecks around there too.

"Around Lincolnshire there are old settlements so I think there would be a lot to be found. It would help us find out about the history of the area."
