The Met Office says that after bright, warm weather over the weekend, Monday and Tuesday are likely to be hot and humid in the south, with thunderstorms hitting the region and spreading north.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey told the Daily Star that temperatures will reach 28C over the weekend before peaking at 31C mid-week.

She said: "Tropical continental air will come up from the south over the next few days and it is going to turn warmer.

"The heat continues into Monday and we could see 31C in the south on Tuesday and Wednesday with 27C or 28C likely in Scotland and the north.

She added: "We expect a thundery breakdown on Tuesday night and into Wednesday, and it will start to turn fresher later in the week."

Meanwhile, The Weather Channel says warm air from Europe will meet Atlantic weather systems bringing violent thunderstorms.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, forecaster Dave Reynolds said: "Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid to upper 20Cs on Wednesday as south to southeasterly winds bring hotter air in from the near continent.

"Along with the heat will come moisture so, as pressure falls from the west, heavy showers and thunderstorms are then expected to develop."
