Police say Venus Williams legally entered junction in fatal crash

Venus Williams legally drove her car into an intersection before a fatal crash in Florida, police have said.

Footage of the car crash between the tennis star and a married couple shows Williams lawfully entered the junction at a green light while driving her Toyota Sequoia near her home in Palm Beach Gardens on June 9.

According to CBS News, a police statement said: "The vehicle driven by Venus Williams lawfully entered the intersection on a circular green traffic signal, and attempted to travel north through the intersection to Ballenisles Drive."

Police said a car entered the intersection in front of Williams and made a left turn, causing her to stop advancing through the junction to avoid a crash. The collision occurred when she started to legally proceed.

The family of Jerome Barson, who died in the collision, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams.

An earlier report said that she was at fault and "violated the right of [the other driver]." Williams' lawyer said the crash was an accident, the BBC reports.

Last week, Venus broke down in tears at a Wimbledon press conference and said: "There are really no words to describe how devastating and - I'm completely speechless."
