Average groceries basket rose sharply in price last month, tracker reveals

The cost of an average basket of groceries rose sharply in June, a monthly tracker shows.

A basket of 35 popular items came to £83.04 - £1.67 more expensive than in May and 21p higher than this time last year, according to mySupermarket's monthly Groceries Tracker found.

The figures bring to an end a continued fall in the price of the basket amid warnings of post-Brexit increases to the cost of imported goods.

The majority of the products rose by 5% or less, but mushrooms and peppers rose by 26% and 15% respectively.

However, items that were cheaper fell in price by between just 1% and 3%.

Overall, the cost of 21 products rose, six fell and eight stayed the same.

Fruit and vegetable staples saw significant increases, with bananas and apples up 4% and 3% respectively and carrots and broccoli both up 5%.

Sausages and deli bacon and ham were all 3% more expensive last month than in May.

MySupermarket's chief executive Gilad Simhony said: "This month we are seeing a rise in the price of a large number of products in the supermarket.

"We believe this is due to the political and economic uncertainty that has taken over the UK in the past six weeks.

"More than ever, customers should do their research before shopping so they can make sure they are getting the best value for money."
