CCTV captures car driving around a car park with a girl on the roof
Two people have been convicted after CCTV footage emerged showing a Ford Fiesta being driven while a teenage girl was on the roof.
The incident happened at a car park in Sea Road, South Shields on March 23 this year.
Ryan McMillan, 18, from Ashington, Northumbria has been ordered to complete 240 hours of unpaid work after being found guilty of dangerous driving. He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months.
The girl was seen climbing on top of the Fiesta and lying on the roof face down while holding onto the edges, before McMillan began driving around the car park.
PC Anthony French said: "Some people may find this behaviour funny but if you choose to get involved in this kind of foolish activity it is only a matter of time before you are involved in a serious collision.
"Motor vehicles are not toys and one slight mistake can lead to a fatal incident that will destroy lives forever.
"We are delighted to see that the magistrate has taken this case seriously and hope it acts as a warning to other young people who find it acceptable to mess around behind the wheel."
The 17-year-old girl - who rode on the roof was convicted of aiding and abetting dangerous driving. She was disqualified from driving for 12 months and will have to re-sit her driving test. She will also have to pay court costs and a surcharge to fund victim services.
