There are lots of reasons for buying a bungalow: mobility problems, easier maintenance - maybe even just not having to vacuum stairs any more.
While they're generally associated with older people, they can make it easier to keep an eye on young children. They also tend to come with larger than average plots, making them ideal for the keen gardener.
Unfortunately, it has to be said that bungalows aren't always particularly beautiful, with unimaginative exteriors and dated decor - but this doesn't have to be the case.

Hampstead, London NW3
Most of the homes in swanky Templewood Avenue are mansions - so this modestly-sized three-bedroom bungalow is a bit of a surprise. Indeed, the agents suggest that it could be pulled down, and something much larger built. There's certainly room in the 90-foot garden. Doing that would be a real shame, though, as it's a charming home as it is, with three bedrooms, a reasonably-sized kitchen and an enormous, sunny living room. Shipdham, Norfolk
A world apart from your usual bungalow, this stunning low-rise modern building has a curved roof and Siberian larch cladding. Robertsbridge, East Sussex
Even in the home counties, bungalows don't usually cost the best part of a million - but this one's that pricey for a reason. There's a lovely stone-floored kitchen, and a great balance between simple modernity and period features. It costs £950,000 through agent John D Wood & Co.

Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire
A Cotswold stone cottage on the edge of an idyllic town, with the river Cam running alongside - and all on the ground floor. This pretty home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with two receptions and a good-sized kitchen, and has a real country feel. It's on the market for £565,000 through agents Mark Annett & Company.

Liversedge, West Yorkshire
